Hyundai Maintenance and Warranty Guide: What Canadian Owners Should Budget For
Hyundai Maintenance and Warranty Guide: What Canadian Owners Should Budget For
Posted on August 20, 2026

Every new Hyundai comes with a warranty booklet that answers two money questions: what Hyundai pays to repair, and what stays on the owner’s side of the ledger. Knowing where that line sits makes the years ahead easier to plan.
This guide walks through Hyundai’s 2026 New Vehicle Warranty terms, the maintenance and wear items owners cover themselves, and the simple habits that keep coverage in good standing from the first kilometre onward.
Hyundai Warranty Coverage at a Glance
Hyundai organizes its warranty into several coverage areas, and each one runs on its own timeline. Every term ends at the months or kilometres listed, whichever comes first, and most terms start on the Warranty Registration Date.
| Coverage | Term |
| New Vehicle Limited Warranty | 5 years / 100,000 km |
| Powertrain | 5 years / 100,000 km |
| Basic Emission Components | 5 years / 100,000 km |
| Major Emission Components | 8 years / 130,000 km |
| Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid System | 8 years / 160,000 km |
| Anti-Perforation | 5 years / unlimited km |
| Dealer-Installed Hyundai Accessories | 3 years / 60,000 km |
| 24 Hour Roadside Assistance | 5 years / unlimited km |
What Does the New Vehicle Limited Warranty Cover?
The New Vehicle Limited Warranty covers any original component found to be defective in material or workmanship under normal use and maintenance. It runs for 5 years or 100,000 km. Components handled under another section of the warranty, such as the hybrid system, follow that section’s terms instead.
Inside that coverage, several components carry shorter terms that end before the 5-year mark:
- Adjustments and air conditioner refrigerant: 1 year / 20,000 km
- Battery: 2 years / 40,000 km
- Paint and audio system: 3 years / 60,000 km
- Replacement parts: 1 year / unlimited km, or 1 year / 20,000 km for engine and transmission replacement parts
Where Hyundai Coverage Runs Longer
Hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models carry a dedicated Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid System Warranty of 8 years or 160,000 km. That is 3 years and 60,000 km beyond the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. On hybrids, it covers the hybrid battery pack assembly, hybrid starter and generator, hybrid power control unit, automatic transmission including the traction motor, and the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) cooler.
The PHEV list covers the same starter and generator, power control unit, transmission, and EGR cooler, plus the main and sub hybrid battery pack assemblies, on-board charger, PHEV radiator, and insulated fuel tank.
Every Hyundai also carries an Emission System Warranty. Basic emission components are covered for 5 years or 100,000 km, and major emission components are covered for 8 years or 130,000 km. Both depend on the vehicle being maintained according to the schedule in the Owner’s Manual. Before paying for a repair after year 5, check if the part falls under the hybrid system or major emission coverage.
What Is Not Covered Under Warranty?
Hyundai’s warranty covers defects in material or workmanship. Normal maintenance service is excluded, including oil changes, tire rotation, wheel balancing, headlight aiming, engine tune-ups, and fluids such as engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, and windshield washer fluid.
Normal replacement of service items is also excluded: spark plugs, wiper blades, fuses, worn brake and clutch linings, filters, lamp bulbs, belts, hoses, and tires. Damage or failure caused by neglected maintenance, misuse, accidents, theft, fire, non-Genuine Hyundai parts, or modification, tampering, or improper repair falls outside coverage too.
The same goes for normal deterioration of rubber parts, upholstery, and soft trim, and for slight noises or vibrations that do not affect quality or function. Consequential costs such as fuel, travel, lodging, and loss of use of the vehicle are not reimbursed.
What Should Owners Budget for Routine Maintenance?
The exclusions list doubles as a budget checklist, and the owner’s costs fall into three groups.
Scheduled service comes first. Oil changes, fluid replenishment, tire rotations, and wheel balancing follow the intervals set out in the Owner’s Manual, which makes them easy to plan for.
Wear items come second. Brake linings, wiper blades, filters, spark plugs, bulbs, belts, and hoses wear with use and get replaced at the owner’s expense. Tires belong in this group as well. They are excluded from warranty coverage entirely, so plan for a replacement set as part of long-term ownership costs. Components with shorter terms, like the battery at 2 years or 40,000 km, shift to the owner’s budget earlier.
Seasonal care comes third. Hyundai notes that aluminum is subject to corrosion from environmental conditions and asks owners to give alloy wheels special attention in winter, cleaning them thoroughly after driving on salted roads.
How to Keep Your Hyundai Warranty in Good Standing
Hyundai lists clear owner responsibilities in the warranty booklet, starting with proper use, maintenance, and care according to the booklet and the Owner’s Manual.
Keeping maintenance service records is on the list as well. Hyundai states that owners can be asked to show that the required maintenance was performed, so hold on to every receipt, starting with the very first oil change.
Warranty service is handled by bringing the vehicle to an authorized Hyundai dealer during regular business hours. Owners also keep the odometer in working order, so distance travelled can be confirmed for every kilometre-based term.
Checking for trim, paint, or other appearance defects at delivery is another listed responsibility, so a careful walk-around on delivery day is time well spent.
Genuine Parts and Hyundai Accessories
Damage from non-Genuine Hyundai parts, or from devices and accessories installed by parties other than Hyundai, is excluded from coverage. Dealer-installed Hyundai accessories carry their own 3-year / 60,000 km warranty. When installed after the Warranty Registration Date, coverage is 12 months from installation or the balance of that term, whichever is greater. Over-the-counter Hyundai accessories are covered for 12 months with unlimited kilometres.
What Does Hyundai Roadside Assistance Include?
Hyundai 24 Hour Roadside Assistance runs for 5 years with unlimited kilometres. It provides the following services at no expense:
- Fuel delivery and battery boosting
- Flat tire changing and lockout service
- Mechanical first aid, towing, and winching or extrication
- Trip interruption assistance
Hyundai describes the program as a service provided in conjunction with its warranty, separate from the warranty coverage itself.
